Sanyi Township in Miaoli is a “slow city” certified by CittaSlow International and this is where you will find Shuangtan Leisure Agricultural Region. Easily accessible by different modes of transportation, Shuangtan Leisure Agricultural Region is located between two famous tourist destinations. Taking the Sanyi exit from National Freeway 1, you will first pass by Sanyi woodcarving street, then Shuangtan Leisure Agricultural Region, and if you proceed further, you will see Ginger Garden.
Introduction
Linked by County Highway 130, the surrounding area is mostly occupied by small farmers planting peach, apricot and citruses, wood sculptors and ceramic artists, and cultural and creative businesses started by rural returnees. With Shuangtan Agricultural Cultural Tourism Development Association as the hub, they have grown stronger and made this area increasingly famous.

Visitors arriving at Shuangtan Leisure Agricultural Region’s tourist service center love to take photos of the beautiful farm village scenery of County Highway 130 next to the 3D wall painting, purchase a few bottles of beverages made from crops grown by local farmers and sold by Shuangtan Agricultural Cultural Tourism Development Association (e.g. perilla apricot tea and mika orange tea), or make their own pot of aromatic healthy Chinese mugwort tea using healthy ingredients, such as licorice, wolfberry and red date, and Chinese mugwort leaves they have crushed themselves. When drinking the tea, the unique aroma of the Chinese mugwort will still linger in their hands. Containing natural fruit bits, even the lollipops sold here are amazing. All products sold at Shuangtan Leisure Agricultural Region’s tourist service center are the sweat and toil of nearby farmers and craftsmen. You will be surprised by the large number of farmers and craftmanship hidden in the leisure farming village on both sides of County Highway 130, your only problem will be not having enough time to shop and buy everything.

Long time ago, there was a lake on each side of Xihu River which passes through the region, namely Bogong Lake and Wangye Lake. According to chairman of Shuangtan Agricultural Cultural Tourism Development Association, Tang Yao-sheng, this is the reason for the name Shuangtan (literally means two lakes). The lakes disappeared as time passed and the surrounding is replaced by peach and apricot farmers. The Farmers’ Association’s peach and apricot production and marketing group became the “Shuangtan Promotion Management Committee” and established the Shuangtan Agricultural Cultural Tourism Development Association in 2018. It leased the idled space belonging to the township office which became the current address of the Shuangtan Leisure Agricultural Region’s tourist service center. Using this as a hub, farmers, guesthouses, artisans and artists along the narrow region of County Highway 130 are linked together. During peach, apricot and citrus harvest seasons, farm produce is further processed here to make dried fruits and beverages. Even leftover flesh from squeezed fruits is not wasted as it is used in making lollipops which visitors can DIY, fully demonstrating the hardworking and thrifty nature of the Hakka people. Tang laughingly said that many visitors visiting the Sanyi woodcarving region in front and Ginger Garden behind have discovered this amazing place by accident when they come to use the public restrooms. They would have missed it if they traveled too fast. It is aptly called a slow city as you need time to slowly appreciate its beauty so slow down and discover the surprises in store at Shuangtan Leisure Agricultural Region.
