Introduction

Dating back to the Japanese colonial era, the ” Dongshih Forest Garden ” has long been a hub of seasonal beauty. In January and February, cherry blossoms bloom in abundance, while April and May host the Tung blossoms, showcasing breathtaking views. Fireflies grace the park between March and May thanks to its pristine ecological environment, creating a luminous spectacle. From June to August, stag beetles thrive and attract young insect enthusiasts. September and October bring crisp autumn air, ideal for leisurely walks along the trails and appreciating the park’s diverse ecology. In November and December, the autumn leaves turn vibrant red and present a picturesque landscape.

The park highlights various ecological engineering methods, such as fishways, honeycomb grid embankments, wooden frame reinforcements, pre-cast trough frame embankments, and stone masonry. Within the short stretch of the Sijiaolin stream, visitors can observe more than 14 types of eco-engineering techniques, perfectly embodying its reputation as an outdoor classroom for soil and water conservation.

By closely examining these eco-engineering techniques, one discovers their unified purpose of maintaining natural harmony. The ultimate achievement lies in construction work so integrated with nature that it appears untouched—an insight often revealed during guided tours. The park also offers an array of well-designed trails. Some are wide and easy to traverse, while others, like the “Exploration Trail,” remain in a more untouched state. Walking along these paths, one may come across arm-thick vines spiraling around tree trunks, some even strangling the trees—a natural phenomenon that invites reflection on the balance between human intervention and nature.

The park’s physical training grounds provide additional attractions for visitors of all ages. Trying out all the facilities guarantees an energetic, sweat-inducing, yet fun experience.
