A zero-distance experience with softshell turtles — an aquaculture journey with turtles Has It Hatched Yet?

The first generation, Mr. Hsieh, has been raising softshell turtles for over 40 years. Today, the second generation — young farmer Hsieh Yu-Tzu, who studied abroad, and her sister Hsieh Ni-Yen — have returned home to take over the farm. They have introduced eco-friendly and sustainable aquaculture practices into their turtle farm.

Introduction

Hsieh Yu-Tzu is responsible for farming and agri-food education, while her sister manages exports to Japan. In 2014, they established NIYU LIFE International Co., Ltd., successfully exporting high-quality, zero-residue Taiwanese softshell turtles to Japan’s premium dining market.

Calling herself the “Softshell Turtle Grandma,” Hsieh Yu-Tzu loves animals. She says, “Even though I’ve seen baby turtles hatch thousands of times, every moment still feels magical. Watching them break out of their shells with all their strength is incredibly adorable!”

Visitors begin with an educational tour, including touching newborn hatchlings and feeding turtles. The most popular and unique activity is the “Egg Hatching DIY.”

Through this experience, visitors not only learn the differences between turtles and softshell turtles, but also get to take eggs home and observe the hatching process. With engaging guided tours and interactive teaching tools, visitors gain a deeper understanding of turtle reproduction and care.

Features of Agricultural Tourism

Fish Farming

After the activity, participants bring home an incubation box with turtle eggs, allowing them to welcome new life at home. If they are unable to continue raising them, the farm provides a complete return system and even a “Turtle Shelter,” ensuring no worries about aftercare.

Beyond learning incubation, the experience fosters responsibility in children and teaches respect for life.

While export remains the primary market, “Has It Hatched Yet?” aims to create a space where visitors can connect directly with producers. The farm is developing into a sixth-sector industry, offering experiential activities during off-peak farming periods to promote understanding of softshell turtle farming.

Due to limited time and manpower, visits are by reservation only, ensuring a well-organized, enjoyable, and educational experience for all.
