Ba-Jia Leisure Fish Farm, originally named “Ba-Jia Goldfish and Koi Aquafarm,” was built in the “Hometown of Water,” Yuanshan Township, Yilan County. It covers an area of 2.2 hectares. Since 1997, the Fish Farm has not only started breeding ayu, but has also rented an aquafarm up to 6 hectares in Zhuanwei Township to expand the business. At that time, about 90% of the ayu in Taiwan was from Yilan. “Ba-Jia,” yielding up to 100 tons annually, was the largest aquafarm for ayu in Taiwan. Later, Ba-Jia also bred Taiwan shovel-jaw carp and Danube sturgeon. Under the promotion of “one township with one leisure agriculture and fishing park” policy, Ba-jia established a theme restaurant in 2003 and was officially renamed “Ba-Jia Leisure Fish Farm.”
The Fish Farm also recovered many freshwater native fishes, such as paradise fish and Japanese rice fish. Besides, Ba-Jia has kept many exotic species, including alligator snapping turtles, red-eared sliders, etc. Due to its special environment, up to 2000 little egrets and black-crowned night herons inhabit the surroundings all year round. In winter, common teals and cranes would gather locally.
