Next to an irrigation canal, a large greenhouse reveals glimpses of the bright yellow Oncidium orchids inside. Beside the greenhouse stands a villa designed like a castle with a pointed tower—this is unmistakably the ” GENG NIOU YUAN.”
Introduction
Now operated by third-generation owner Tsao Min-Pei, the GENG NIOU YUAN carries a rich history. Tsao shares that her grandfather once raised cattle in the Yueh-Mei Mountain area while cultivating grapes and sugarcane. Later, the family transitioned to growing Oncidium orchids, discovering that this form of precision agriculture was highly promising.
To achieve higher prices in the Japanese export market during Christmas, they adopt a unique approach: removing the springtime buds and using nighttime lighting to delay the orchids’ bloom. This tactic avoids the typical peak production period for Oncidium orchids, allowing them to be exported at the end of the year when prices are at their highest.

Upon entering the one-hectare greenhouse, visitors are greeted with excellent ventilation and a cool, fresh atmosphere. Elevated rows of Oncidium orchids are neatly organized, with the ground covered in gravel for cleanliness and to prevent weed growth. Each orchid stands straight and radiant with bright yellow blossoms. Thanks to the elevated growing system, the blooming orchids are at chest height, making them convenient to care for and perfect for photos. Visitors are often enchanted by the picturesque surroundings and can’t help but snap countless photos.

Flora
While marveling at the vibrant Oncidium orchids above, don’t forget to look down —you will likely spot a group of Call ducks scurrying about. These charming ducks are essential helpers in maintaining the flowers. Since the greenhouse prevents pests like butterflies, there’s no need for pesticides, but snails can still pose challenges. The Call ducks act as natural pest control, and their droppings also enrich the soil, providing a win-win solution for the garden.Guests staying overnight may even have the chance to witness flower farmers early in the morning, harvesting large bundles of Oncidium orchids for airfreight export to Japan and Western markets.
Additionally, visitors can try their hand at making a Oncidium orchid moss ball to take home. These orchids are simple to care for, and when they bloom into their elegant form, the sense of achievement is indescribable.
