Introduction
“This is really clean and odorless!” Any place rearing livestock usually smells to some extent, but most visitors note that there is no smell when they get to Home of Sambar Deer. After second-generation owner Cheng Wen-Pin took over, he renovated the deer houses to reinforce ventilation, lighting and aisle width. The deer houses are cleaned twice a day on a daily basis and up to four times a day or more on Saturdays and Sundays. “The environment is the most fundamental aspect of the farm. It is good to deer and people, which is especially important given we get a lot of children visiting so it’s important that it’s cleaned properly.”
Most deer at the farm are Formosan Sambar Deer. The farm mainly produces velvet antlers. Sika deer mainly interact with tourists, and activities on offer include walking deer on a leash and feeding young deer milk. Having reared about 150 Formosan Sambar Deer and Sika Deer in total, the farm is a considerably large deer farm in Northern Taiwan. “When a Formosan Sambar Deer is brought out to meet visitors, they typically stay in the corner and ignore everyone, but tamed under artificial feeding, Sika Deer tend to be curious of people.”
Cheng Wen-Pin said that in 2015, the Taoyuan County Government promoted the establishment of Dagushan Leisure Farm. The Chief of the Village asked him to turn the farm into a tourism deer farm, chipping in with his original plan. The farm became a great hit after a kindergarten teacher took a group of children here and posted positive comments on Facebook. Tourists then heard about the excellent deer farm about 10 minutes away from Taoyuan Airport MRT A10 Station.

The image of Sika Deer is on the NTD500. Their spots change by the seasons.
One of the designs on NTD 500 is Sika deer, so named due to the plum-blossom-like spots on their body. In fact, the spots change according to the season. In the winter, their fur is lighter in color and they lose some of their white fur. With thick and dense fur, the spots are covered. In the summer, the fur becomes really beautiful. If tourists wish to see the change in spots, Home of Sambar Deer is a good place to visit for families. Through the owner’s guided tour, tourists learn about deer’s behavior and have fun feeding them.
The farm prepares two kinds of deer feed. Pangola grass contains about 16% protein. The fawns are able to grow more muscle feeding on this. When feeding the deer, visitors can put the feed directly on their palm or on the mud wall. The Sika or Sambar deer roll the feed away with their tongues. The other feed is general pasture grass grown on mass at the entrance of the farm. Visitors can also race the deer, paint deer figurines, and assemble wooden deer, among other activities.
