There is a 175 coffee road in Dongshan, Tainan. The scenery is beautiful, and the longan trees on the mountain are harvested in summer. When smoke rises from the roasting stove, the hard work and free-living lifestyle of the farmers wafts in the air.

Introduction

“Longhushan Ecological Farm” is located on a small hill. Walking up from the store entrance, you can see longan trees scattered everywhere, densely hung with sweet fruits, and clumps of coffee waiting to mature. Roasting longan is a rare experience. Churning large pieces of shelled longan with a wooden rake in the kiln, filled with smoke, sweat and tears, one may truly experience the hardship of the farmers.

Li Fengcun has lived with his father in Longhu Mountain for 60 years. Up to eight varieties of longan trees are found on an area of 2 hectares, including the commonly seen “pink shell” and the largest variety “October”. After his refinement, various longans have been brought to the market, and the production period has extended from the original August – September to January of the following year. No herbicides or chemical fertilizers are used, and the eco-friendly management style paves the way for orchard tourism.

The production season is different from others, and even the dried longan goes against the trend. Li Fengcun says that most fruit farmers harvest fruits in August and September, and only the longans that are rejected are roasted. Conversely, he roasts them as soon as they are harvested, and does not sell fresh fruits until November. This way, fleshy dried longans become available in summer, and the sweetest longans are available in winter, culminating in different market segments.

What is most surprising is that his dried longan are roasted according to variety and then sold by different grades. Eight varieties and three different grades produces 24 items, each different in color, textures and shape to cater to different customer groups. “With so many choices, you will always find something you like”. Even if it takes twice as much manpower and time, what is important is that customers see their sincerity and effort.
