Introduction

Mastering the art of winemaking is challenging, and scaling up production requires significant investment. DOMAINE SHU SHENG opted for a bold and ambitious approach—overseeing the entire process from grape cultivation and winemaking, to retail and tasting experiences, rivaling well-known international wineries.

In 2015, Shusheng’s “Pu Tao Wine,” crafted from Golden Muscat grapes, won the gold medal in the UK World Wine Awards for varietal wines and claimed the world champion title in fortified wines, while competing alongside five other countries. By 2017, the “Shusheng Red Pu Tao Wine,” made from Black Queen grapes, earned a gold medal at the Mundus Vini World Wine Competition in Germany. Most recently, in 2024, the winery’s “Seventeen” wine once again secured a world gold medal.

Wine is deeply connected to its region and terrain. Taiwan’s unique climate and environment boast distinct characteristics. Shusheng uses the “warm maturation” techniques to produce wines with a flavor profile that is quintessentially Taiwanese. In addition to winning multiple international awards, Shusheng has also caught the attention of a famous British whisky distillery, which has started acquiring Shusheng’s aged oak barrels to experiment with, adding a touch of Taiwanese flavor to their whiskies

When visiting DOMAINE SHU SHENG, one might initially think it’s just a modest roadside shop. However, a guided tour reveals a vineyard behind the building, where visitors can see various grape varieties planted at different times. From the thickness of the grapevines to the way the stone walls are constructed, one can observe traces of history throughout the estate. A standout feature of visiting Shusheng is the chance to taste wines stemming from different grape varieties and fermentation methods. This comparative tasting offers a vivid way to understand how factors such as vintage, weather, and winemaking techniques influence the flavor of wine. It’s truly a fascinating experience! After sampling a range of wines, many visitors go away with a deeper appreciation of winemaking, realizing that excellent wines don’t necessarily have to be imported. Taiwan’s terrain is equally capable of producing world-class wines.
