Shanlin District Riguang Xiaolin Community
In 2009, the August 8 flood and mudslides devastated Xiaolin Village. Survivors relocated to new areas, and the largest settlement among them became known as ” Riguang Xiaolin.” This name, inspired by sunflowers gifted by Japanese friends, symbolizes resilience and hope, encouraging residents to look forward to a brighter future.
Introduction
Over the past decade, the Riguang Xiaolin Community Development Association has collaborated with residents to promote the culture of the Dawulong people through local products, cultural events, and festivals. They launched the Sunny Market, created community tours, and organized cultural exhibitions and experiences, attracting visitors from across the globe.

Plants are deeply integrated into life at Riguang Xiaolin. Turmeric and cockspur thorn are cultivated locally, yielding a variety of innovative products. Turmeric, known for its health benefits, is processed into powder for cooking and specialty products.
Cockspur thorn, a natural gift, is dried to retain its nutrients and distinct flavor, then ground into powder to make tea, and can also be used in cooking.

Xiaolin residents skillfully use local ingredients and secret recipes to create unique dishes. The Riguang Xiaolin Community Development Association offers signature meals, such as Cockspur Thorn Chicken Soup, a nourishing dish essential for postpartum recovery, and “Plum Sauce Japanese Pork Cutlet,” featuring seasonal homemade plum sauce for a refreshing flavor. Another crowd favorite is “Turmeric Stinky Tofu,” with its golden, crispy exterior paired with a special chili sauce for a distinctive taste.
The annual Dawulong Year-End Festival “Night Ritual,” held on the 15th day of the ninth lunar month, features villagers singing and sharing cultural stories with visitors. Daytime activities include guided community tours, introductions to local plants and culture, and hands-on workshops where participants can weave rattan into bracelets, rings, or bag ties. Visitors can also shop for unique souvenirs at the community co-op, including turmeric powder, turmeric soap, autumn turmeric cleansing gift sets, cockspur thorn tea bags, and cockspur thorn soup packs.
